Like so many of the biggest names in motorsport, Rob Smith started his career in karting, but unlike many of these big names he came to the sport relatively late at the age of 13. This makes his rise to the pinnacle of UK motorsport even more extraordinary, an achievement made possible by a combination of driving skill and business acumen.
Rob started watching motorsport during the height of the Super Touring era, racing as Alain Menu or Jason Plato in the TOCA video games and even sketching Mondeos and Lagunas in his school books, so it was no surprise that once he started racing he set his sights on reaching the British Touring Car Championship.
To set about achieving this Rob began his tin-top career in the Renault UK Clio Cup, before becoming a constant championship contender during 4 seasons in the MINI CHALLENGE with EXCELR8 Motorsport, claiming numerous pole positions, podiums and race wins, which alongside his talents as a brand ambassador marked him out as a future star of the BTCC.
In 2019 this potential became a reality as both Rob and the EXCELR8 team made their debut at the highest level, with driver and team out-performing their ageing MG6 throughout the season. Alongside his driving duties Rob took on the role of Commercial Manager and Graphic Designer, playing an important part in securing Commercial Partners for the team and designing the teams brand image and all marketing material.
Unfortunately circumstances have prevented Rob from returning to the BTCC since then, but this has only made him more determined to forge new Commercial Partnerships in order to return to the championship and fulfil his potential as a front runner at the pinnacle of UK motorsport.
